Why are we digging and buying clothes?
For showing off to other people? Or just for self-satisfaction?

If you’re confused about which of the two, it’s a given — because all fashion people wear clothes for both.

“Showing Off”

Showing off is essential for us. Most people who first fall in love with clothes place an emphasis on how they are perceived by others.
For example, they might buy logo-heavy designer pieces or expensive items to make a statement.
Even fashion vets, who have a very firm style, also show off to others their commitment to one style, or the fact that they wear really unusual clothes that are different from others.

However, if your only goal is to show off, you’ll just become another trend follower with no real identity.
In other words, you won’t be wearing the clothes — the clothes will be wearing you.
That’s why it’s important to also focus on self-satisfaction.

“Self-Satisfaction”

Self-satisfaction is the biggest reason why we like clothes.
As we stay interested in fashion over time, we start to discover what styles suit us best and what materials we truly love.
These things become the building blocks of our personal taste.
And gradually, instead of dressing to please others, we begin to focus more on satisfying our own preferences.
Through this process, our personal style becomes more and more defined.

But focusing too much on self-satisfaction can also become a problem.
After all, fashion is a form of communication that’s meant to be seen by others.
If you completely ignore how others perceive it and only dress to please yourself,
your style can end up being an isolated taste — nothing more, nothing less —
and you might block your own potential for growth.

In the end, fashion isn’t just about self-satisfaction or showing off — it’s about the balance between the two.
When we learn to express ourselves honestly while still understanding how we’re seen by others,
that’s when our relationship with fashion becomes truly complete.
Because real style doesn’t come from choosing one side
it comes from knowing how to blend both into something that feels genuinely you.
